Creating Happiness

In spite of reading books of cheer

it is I who manage to chanticleer

the morning light with darkened clouds

where certain sadness yet abounds

Those books of cheer still lying here

defy a tear in a ruse to clear

that recent past that seems to frown

on brow that weighs the present down

Such past may visit present day

with the pain and hurt of yesterday

but if I choose I'm free to pen

that I don't want that day again

I foresee events will be

written in a book by me

shallowing thus the deepened brow

bringing up the rear to now

Declaring glee and cheating time

affronts me as bad rehearsal lines

that for which for one is true

by essence excludes a careless view

To Happiness the sulky moves along

through muddy ground to hint of song

the wheels turn slowly to rendezvous

I expect to get there... when I do
