I saw her lose religion

in a perky sort of way

she lost sight of the lighthouse

then sensed trouble on the bay

I tell you there's no keeper

like I believed back when

life was good and wholesome

and he was there, but then....

her cheeks kept moist from breakers' spray

as she looked across the bay

no candle in the lighthouse

where the keeper was away

I believed for all my life

and was taken for a fool

taught and tricked and taken in

at home and sunday school

no light ! it's a calamity

and the worst part of it all

as my ship is beached I admit no light

to guide or take the fall
